GLAMORGAN WELSH PONY AND COB SPRING SHOW.
Pencoed College. 14th. April 2013.

Judges Report - Dr Etienne Stevens - Section C & D - click here

There were unprecedented entries at the Glamorgan WPCA Spring Show with some exhibitors having travelled for 4 or 5 hours. Yearling classes had to be split into separate colt and filly classes and two-year-old and three-year-old fillies had to be separated owing to sheer numbers. The Show started at 10am and the last class entered the ring at 8pm with exhibitors having long journeys to travel home.
Supreme in-hand exhibit with judges Miss Eleri Jones (Trawsfynydd, section A), Mrs Jocelyn Price (Hay-on-Wye section B and part-breds) and Dr Etienne Stevens from France (sections C and D) was the Welsh cob stallion Thorneyside The Saracen produced by Justin Walters of Tredegar for the Thorneyside Stud, Windsor. This stallion achieved a place in Welsh cob history last year when his son, the colt foal Thorneyside Royal Command broke all records at £16,000 at the Brightwells Autumn Sales. Reserve champion at Pencoed was another son of his, the three-year-old colt Thorneyside Casino which his owner Tom Stevens brought all the way from Guildford. The dam of Casino was Stormydown Dilys bred locally by John and Sooraya Cook of Kenfig Hill, Dilys also being grand-dam of the two-year-old Thorneyside Golden Boy which sold for £22,000 on the Brightwells Sale.
Reserve in-hand supreme was the section B stallion Trefriw Tomkin owned by Katie Parry of Cilcennin. Katie previously produced Tomkin for his breeder, Joss Owen of Llangeitho but has now bought him and Tomkin also captured the reserve Supreme ridden championship after performing impeccably ridden by Anna Chester. Reserve section B champion was the beautiful mare Llanarth Rose owned by Ceri Fell of the Brynseion Stud. Brynseion Stud previously had sections A with Brynseion stallions having made a name for themselves overseas, section C which won Supremes at the Horse Of The Year Show and section D which won best of breed at Olympia and Brynseion Stud has now acquired a formidable string of section B’s.
Champion section A was the dark grey three-year-old filly Sarum Rosie May produced by Adam Fletcher for Stewart and Ann Franklin of Cullompton, Devon. Rosie May is sired by the Dutch-bred Voermanhof Nicolas and his dam’s Sarum “R” family has produced many championship winners at major Shows. Reserve section A champion was the yearling filly Glebedale Jubilee owned by Kitty Bodily of Llandewi Skirrid, Abergavenny. Kitty also won the yearling colt class with Pendock Paige Buy and the mare class with his dam Pendock Flower Girl.
Two others of Justin Walters’ charges, the chestnut stallion Nye Poppie’s Boy and the three-year-old filly Corstan Penelope were section C champion and reserve. A consistent winner in South Wales, Poppie’s Boy was bred by the Kehoe family, also of Tredegar. Penelope, bred and owned by Nicole Musson of Mildenhall, Suffolk has been leased to WPCS staff member Iola Lloyd-Hughes while Nicole has Iola’s well-known stallion Ty’rllawn Mr Cool.
Champion Welsh part-bred was the six-year-old coloured gelding Hollyland Maraschino owned by Gemma Hale of Bridgend. Maraschino was bred at Wendy Campbell’s Hollyland Stud in Pembroke which has produced so many top-class coloured horse and ponies. Reserve part-bred champion was J C Davies’ colt Chinook Delight bred by Wilf Davies of Chinook, breeder and joint owner of the supreme ridden champion at Pencoed.
The Landon family of Pontantwn, Kidwelly brought their stunning Horse of the Year winner Brynodyn Sirius to be greatly admired by all and win the ridden mini championship. Reserve was Leah Dalley’s recently acquired part-bred first ridden Thurstonhouse Sundance who is a perfect mount for Madison Dalley only just graduated from lead-rein. Former Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador Lucinda Dargavel won the novice ridden championship on the section B stallin Hilin Capiello which she purchased on the Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale. Danielle Everitt always likes to produce new novice ridden section D’s and was reserve on her Monahawk Masterpiece by Trevallion Picasso.
It has already been mentioned that Trefriw Tomkin won both in hand and ridden section B; Blackhill Tazmin from Hereford won the ridden section A’s, Katie Parry produced Gwunydd Ceidiog for Nicky Bond to win the section C’s and the ten-year-old section D mare Ddeusant Diamond Edge put up a super show to beat several champions to win her ridden class.
Judge of the supreme ridden championship was Mr Martyn Davies of Llantwit Major and his choice was the part-bred gelding Chinook Excel jointly owned by his breeder Wilf Davies and producer Cath Hughes-Jones and superbly ridden by Alexia Chard with the reserve slot providing Trefriw Tomkin with another reserve supreme sash.

GLAMORGAN WELSH PONY AND COB ASSOCIATION FOAL SHOW 2012

Wilcrick Equerry ( A ) Reserve
Ringside Lucifer ( D ) Supreme Champion
with judges Ms Sian Coulthard, Mrs Carole Anderson and Mr Robert Jones

Exhibitors came from far and wide, from Gloucester, Somerset, Cardigan and Haverfordwest to the Foal Show of the Glamorgan Welsh Pony and Cob Association held at Pencoed College on 13th October. Many exhibitors had never attended this Show previously and some of the exhibits had been bought for top prices at recent Sales. With the three judges Ms Sian Coulthard ( section A ), Mrs Carole Anderson (C & D) and Mr Robert Jones (B and part-breds) coming together to decide on the supreme, it was a coincidence that all five section champions were chestnuts each with four white legs, and the supreme award went to the section D colt foal Ringside Lucifer with the section A colt Wilcrick Equerry in reserve position.

Ringside Lucifer is owner-bred by Gareth and Christine Williams of Castleton, Cardiff and his only previous showring appearance was when he won from 51 colt and filly entries at the Royal Welsh Show; he is sired by the 2009 Royal Welsh champion Pennal Brynmor out of Pennal Mia’s Image. Reserve section D champion was a smart dun filly Ridgehill Lady Louisa owned by Steve Patch and Kevin Howdle of Felton, North Somerset; she is sired by Cascob Golden Warrior out of Ridgehill Lady Louanne.

Champion section A and reserve supreme was Wilcrick Equerry produced by Popsters Stud of Littledean, Gloucestershire for Roger Munnings of Chippenham; he is full-brother to the same owner’s yearling filly Wilcrick Easter Lilly that has won many major successes this year and also to the consistent two-year-old colt Wilcrick Envoy. Reserve section A champion was the grey 2nd-placed colt Dukeshill Polar Express, sired by the many-times champion Dukeshill Darcy and he is owned by Ryan Wilson of the Meisgyn Stud, Pontyclun.

Winner of the largest class of the day, that for section A filly foals with 12 exhibits was the chestnut Milwas Seren Aur owned by Bethan Hooper and Rhydian Donati of Groesfaen; she is the first foal sired by their Ceulan Calon Lan winner of 16 championships and her dam is Ceulan Sali who was overall champion of the Royal Show in 1998. Placed 2nd in this class was the grey Llanfilo Amber’s Lucky Lady owned by Wayne and Sharon Lloyd of Llanfilo, Brecon.

The section B champion was the chestnut filly Cadlanvalley Anna Liza owned by Hywel and Yvonne Davies of St Dogmaels, Cardigan and she is sired by their Boston Bonaparte who featured amongst the top sires in the WPCS sire-ratings last year. Reserve champion was Alex Williams’ filly Hilin Athena and she is sired by another of the top sires, Eyarth Tayma and 3rd was John Willams’ Llanwarne Diamond Rose sired by Llanarth Da Vinci and she came all the way from Harewood End, Hetreford.

Fillies also captured the main awards in section C with the championship going to Popsters Stud’s Popsters Dixie Chick sired by their Joyton May Be Black, last year’s top of the sire ratings and she is entered for the Brightwells Saturday Cob Sale. Reserve champion was Graham Moffatt’s Pwllmelin Scarlet Ribbons sired by the many-times champion Moorcroft The Master and produced by Justin Walters of the Ty’rllawn Stud.

Champion Welsh part-bred was the colt Penstrumbly Our Latif owned by Kathy Hall of Goodwick, Pembrokeshire; he was very well grown and developed considering that he was an orphan foal and is sired by the well-known Oldenburg sire Liberace. The coloured filly Drummer was reserve, she is sired by King William and is owned by Keith and Jane Jones of St Mary Church, Cowbridge.
